God actually is quite Great: Churches that raided slave ships

Some time back, Michael Bird posted a really awesome excerpt from the letters of Saint Augustine on his blog, Euangelion. Here Augustine recounts the response of the church in Hippo to news that slave traders were docked at their shores, preparing to disembark with scores of Africans who were abducted for enslavement. With what happens next, keep in mind that this is about 1400 years before William Wilberforce and the abolition of the slave trade in England.
One of the things I love about this account is that it shows not just what one exceptional believer can do, but what an entire congregation can do, a powerful overflow of the worshipping life of the Church.
